“Here’s your laptop, good luck” is not an onboarding plan. The first 90 days decide whether a great hire becomes a great employee or a regretted resignation. This template breaks the 90 days into clear phases with goals you can actually measure.
Days 1–30: Learn
Goal: understand the role, the team, and how work gets done here.
- Complete all HR paperwork and systems setup
- Meet every key stakeholder in a 1:1
- Shadow top performers
- Deliver one small, visible win
- Day-30 check-in: What’s clear? What’s confusing? What do you need?
Days 31–60: Contribute
Goal: own real work with support.
- Take full ownership of 2–3 core responsibilities
- Start contributing ideas, not just executing tasks
- Identify one process to improve and propose the fix
- Day-60 check-in: progress against goals, skill gaps, feedback both ways
Days 61–90: Perform
Goal: operate independently at full expectations.
- Own projects end-to-end
- Mentor the next new hire on something you’ve mastered
- Day-90 review: formal assessment — confirm the hire, set next-quarter goals, discuss growth path
The manager’s weekly cadence
Week 1: daily 15-min check-ins. Weeks 2–4: twice weekly. Month 2–3: weekly 1:1s. Taper as independence grows — but never below biweekly in the first six months.
